Best bars in Oaxaca
I already mentioned the best mezcal bars in Oaxaca, so now let’s talk about the rest of bars I really enjoy visiting and hanging out.
Txalaparta
This may be the best option to visit while you’re in Oaxaca, it’s a very big place with 5 bars inside of it, where you can find all kind of beers, cocktails and spirits in general, but what makes Txalaparta a “must” is that there’s a great mix of locals, nationals and tourists hanging out everyday. Most of the locals have (at least) one story of them drinking and having fun in there. There’s live music and dj’s everynight closing around 3 am.
(you may find us there partying as well).
Matamoros 208
Justa Rufina
A new terrace with an amazing view to Santo Domingo church, just recently one of the best mixologist in Oaxaca opened this spot and is growing nicely, with some sea food to match with the cocktails and chill environment. Don’t miss this spot and enjoy the creations of Cesar and his terrific cocktails.
Allende 211
Aloha
This tiki bar has something to surprise everyone, from their cocktails to the karaoke nights they host every Friday, and from time to time when the bartenders want to sing along, so be prepared for a party and a great experience. Tell Luis or Brisnia that you’re up for the experience.
Note: this is the spot where originally the Mezcal Speakeasy started, right behind the car.
Gómez Farías 220
Salón de la Fama
This is a classic cantina where you’ll get a great michelada while hanging out with local artists that usually stop by between jobs.
Let me know if I should create a list of only traditional cantinas.
Porfirio Díaz 115
Don Guanabana Tasting Room
Local brewer that has grown from scratch to having his own tasting room with craft beers from all over Mexico, with a specialization on local artisanal beers. Is inside another bar, so you can share some food and enjoy the swimming pool. Ask David to sample his seasonal beer.
Mártires de Tacubaya 517
La Casa del Mezcal
Even though it includes the word mezcal in its name, I don’t know any locals who visit this spot for the mezcal. It’s an old bar just next to the Mercado Veinte de Noviembre, so just the perfect spot to hide from the crowd and enjoy a cold beer alongside many locals. Very nicely decorated with woodwork that deserves a time to appreciate it.
I personally skip every single mezcal in there, but enjoy the ambiance and cold beers.
Flores Magón 209
These are some places we usually hang out, there are more but more focused on the food instead of the drinks. Also there are plenty more, but not for my personal taste, I’m getting old and don’t enjoy the reggaeton and 18 to 25 year old customers only, I’m into bars instead of clubs, but that’s my personal opinion.
Restaurants that I enjoy going and drinking as well: Gourmand, Berlina and Sabina Sabe.
While I’m working to create a google maps for all these recommendations, please feel free to reach out to me and share your opinions.
